The app said 80% and school was open. Is it broken?

No. Snow Day is a forecast-based estimate, and boards weigh things no forecast can see: whether the plows got ahead of it, what the route supervisors saw at 5 AM, and local policy. The Why section shows exactly what pushed the number up or down. Use it the way you'd use a rain forecast.

The number is always low, even in big storms.

Check Snow tolerance in Settings. "Typical" is tuned for boards that cancel around 12 cm. If yours cancels at 5 cm, choose "Cancels easily". On the Prairies, turn on the cold policy that matches your board.

When does it notify me?

Once, the evening before, at the time you pick, only if the chance is at or above your threshold. It never repeats for the same morning. A background refresh also runs around 5 AM so the widget and watch are current when you wake up.

The watch says "Open the iPhone app once."

The watch needs your location from the phone the first time. Open Snow Day on your iPhone, let it load, and the watch refreshes on its own from then on.

The widget shows "--".

The widget blanks itself when the last forecast is more than 24 hours old, so it never shows a stale number. Open the app or wait for the next background refresh.

Open-Meteo, blending two weather models (GFS and GEM in North America), plus active alerts from Environment Canada and the US National Weather Service. How it works.
